THE EFFECT OF MULTIVITAMIN MINERAL SUPPLEMENTATION ON HUMORAL, SELULER AND DIETARY ANTIOXIDANT STATUS
Multivitamin-minerals play essential roles in the human body, including immune function and as antioxidants. When supply of these micronutrients cannot be fulfilled from daily meal intake, multivitamin-mineral supplements can be taken to fulfill the
body's requirements. In this research, the effects of multivitamin-mineral supplementation on humoral, cellular, and dietary antioxidant status were assessed in healthy female workers.
The design of the research was a double blind-randomized controlled trial, Split-plot. It involves 300 female subjects aged 20-45 years that work at PT Ricky Putra Giobalindo Tbk, Citereup, Bogor. Each of them randomly received one of the six treatments: Placebo, Placebo + Tetanus-toxoid (TT), Vitamin C, Vitamin C + TT, Multivitamin; mineral (MVM), MVM +TT. The immune parameters used were: WBC, monocyte, neutrofil, NK cell, total lymphocyte count, IgG titer, CD4+ and CD8+ count. The contain of vitamin C supplement was vitamin C 1000 mg, while multivitamin mineral supplement contain 1000 mg vitamin C; 45 mg vitamin E; 700 pg vitamin A; 6,5 mg vitamin B6; 400 gg folic acid; 9,6 gg vitamin BIZ; 10 pg vitamin D; 10 mg Zn; 110 pg Se; 0,9 mg Cu; dan 5 mg Fe. These parameters were measured at baseline levels before treatment and on the 6`h and 10`h week after treatment. TT vaccination is carried out at the end of the 6`h week, after the second blood collection. ANOVA test was done on the i baseline data, the intermediate data (e week), and end data (10h week). Further test with LSD was carried out to determine the factors that affects the outcome of the treatments.
MVM and vitamin C supplementation for 10 weeks affected the non-specific cellular immune function through the improvements of NK cell count, however the effect of ", MVM was stronger than vitamin C. MVM improved some of dietary antioxidant status except for vitamin C, which is improved by vitamin C supplementation. Vitamin C decreased incidence of infection. Results of this study found relationship between Natural Killer with CD4+ (r2 = 0,102, p = 0.000) and CD8+ r2 = 0,023, p = 0.024).
In improving immun function the effect of MVM and Vitamin C supplementaton were similar, meanwhile MVM supplementation showed more effect in improving dietary antioxidant status.
